Sun Requirements ▾

Thrives in full sun. Requires at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily to fully express its bloom potential. If grown in very hot climates, early morning sun with light afternoon shade can help maintain bloom quality and leaf health.

Watering Instructions ▾

Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry. Keep soil consistently moist during establishment; once mature, sunflowers will tolerate short dry spells. Deep, less frequent watering encourages strong root systems. Avoid overly wet or waterlogged conditions.

Care Tips ▾

Soil Prefers well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. Grows happily in a range of soils—loamy, sandy, or even slightly clay—so long as drainage is good. Enrich the planting area with compost or organic matter to support bloom production. In pots, use a quality potting mix with proper drainage holes. Fertilizer Feed lightly at planting time. A light dose of slow-release fertilizer or compost at planting is typically enough. Excessive nitrogen can promote foliage over flowers; keep feeding moderate. Humidity Tolerates average humidity with good airflow. Space plants properly to maintain air circulation and minimize disease. Avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of mildew and other fungal issues. Bloom & Seasonal Notes Blooms appear from midsummer and often continue into early fall, cascading bright warmth across landscapes and containers. Some varieties may form small seed heads, attracting birds or offering potential for harvesting. Planting & Maintenance Tips Planting time: Sow after last frost, when soil has warmed, or transplant nursery starts into April–May. Spacing: In garden beds, allow 10–12 inches between plants for a full display and proper airflow. For container arrangements, one plant per 9-inch pot works great. Staking: Compact 9” size generally stands strong without support. Taller or top-heavy types may benefit from light staking. Deadheading: Remove spent blooms to prolong flowering or let mature heads dry naturally if seed or bird feed is desired.
