Begonia rex varieties, including the Spirit of Mauritius, prefer bright, indirect light. Too little light can dull their vibrant colors, while too much direct sun can scorch their delicate leaves. A spot near an east- or north-facing window, or filtered light through sheer curtains, is ideal for maintaining those rich hues and intricate patterns.
Watering Instructions ▾
Keep the soil evenly moist but never soggy. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering is a common issue with Rex Begonias and can lead to root rot, while letting the plant dry out completely may cause crisping or leaf drop. Use a light, well-draining potting mix—something rich in organic matter but airy enough to prevent waterlogging.
