The World’s Favorite Colors Are Inspired by Nature — and Your Houseplants Fit Right In!

The results are in! Crayola’s first-ever Global Color Vote has revealed that the world’s favorite shades are inspired by the beauty of nature — and even include one named after a plant. From Cerulean Blue to Robin’s Egg Blue and Wisteria, it seems our love for color is deeply rooted in the natural world.

With more than 63,000 participants across 183 countries, Crayola’s survey shows that our color preferences go far beyond the crayon box — they reflect how we connect with the environment around us. And if you’re a plant lover, you’re already surrounded by these beloved hues every day.

Nature’s Palette: How Color Connects Us to the Natural World

Color psychologist Domicele Jonauskaite, Ph.D., explains that shades of blue are universally adored because they remind us of clear skies and calm water — two of the most positive natural experiences. Similarly, purples and lavenders like Wisteria or Lavender evoke feelings of peace and nostalgia, while vibrant pinks and reds bring energy and joy.

So it’s no surprise that Cerulean topped the charts in 46 U.S. states and ranked highly across generations. From Gen Alpha to Baby Boomers, shades of blue consistently dominated — symbolizing calm, creativity, and comfort.

How to Bring These Beloved Colors Into Your Home — with Plants!

You don’t need a paintbrush or a crayon to bring these trending colors into your world  just a few beautiful houseplants. Here’s how:

  • Cerulean Blue: Recreate the calming feel of the sky and sea with plants that have cool-toned leaves or blue-gray foliage, like Eucalyptus, Blue Star Fern, or Silver Pothos. Their subtle hues pair beautifully with minimalist ceramics or blue pots.

  • Robin’s Egg Blue: Add this cheerful shade with succulents and air plants displayed in pastel or turquoise planters. The soft blue-green tones are perfect for creating a soothing atmosphere.

  • Wisteria Purple: If you love romantic, trailing blooms, real Wisteria plants (or even wisteria-inspired décor) bring a dreamy, floral charm to patios and sunrooms alike.

  • Lavender & Violet: For a fragrant, color-rich experience, Lavender plants offer both beauty and calm — plus they’re easy to dry for lasting décor.

Each of these hues not only elevates your space visually but also helps promote the emotions Crayola’s research highlights: calm, comfort, happiness, and creativity.

From Crayons to Containers: Creativity Starts at Home

Crayola’s Chief Marketing Officer, Victoria Lozano, said it best: “Color is integral to who we are and how we see the world.” The same could be said for plants — both color and greenery inspire creativity, boost mood, and connect us to something larger than ourselves.

As Crayola prepares to release their new “World’s Favorite Colors” collection in holiday 2025, why not create your own living color story at home? Whether you decorate with lush greenery, add pops of floral color, or build a serene plant nook filled with soothing blues and purples, your home can reflect the same vibrant creativity that’s inspiring the world.
