Aglaonema Maria (Aglaonema commutatum ‘Maria’)

Aglaonema Maria (Aglaonema commutatum ‘Maria’)

Aglaonema Maria (Aglaonema commutatum ‘Maria’), commonly known as Chinese Evergreen 'Maria', is a classic tropical houseplant prized for its lush, deep green foliage beautifully patterned with silvery-green variegation. Renowned for its exceptional adaptability and low-maintenance nature, this timeless variety is an excellent choice for homes, offices, and indoor spaces where dependable greenery is desired year-round.

The broad, lance-shaped leaves emerge on sturdy upright stems, forming a dense, bushy plant that maintains an elegant appearance with very little care. Its attractive variegation brightens indoor spaces while allowing the plant to tolerate lower light conditions better than many tropical houseplants. This resilience has made Aglaonema Maria one of the most popular indoor foliage plants for both beginners and experienced plant enthusiasts.

Aglaonema Maria performs beautifully on desks, tabletops, bookshelves, plant stands, and as a floor plant in larger containers. It pairs exceptionally well with ZZ Plants, Snake Plants, Peace Lilies, Philodendrons, Pothos, Dracaenas, and Calatheas, creating lush tropical displays with contrasting leaf textures and shades of green.

Sun Requirements ▾

Bright indirect light to low light. An LED grow light can help maintain healthy growth in spaces with limited natural light. While Aglaonema Maria tolerates lower light exceptionally well, brighter indirect light promotes fuller growth and more vibrant variegation. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which can scorch the foliage.

Watering Instructions ▾

Water when the top 2–5 cm (1–2 inches) of soil begins to dry while keeping the potting mix lightly moist but never saturated. Allow excess water to drain completely and reduce watering during the winter months when growth naturally slows.

Care Tips ▾

Rotate the plant every few weeks to encourage even growth and wipe the leaves occasionally to remove dust, allowing the foliage to absorb light more efficiently. Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced houseplant fertilizer at half strength. A moisture meter is a great way to gauge your plant's moisture levels.
