Autograph Tree, botanically known as Clusia rosea, is a tropical evergreen admired for its thick, glossy, paddle-shaped leaves and strong, architectural growth. Its common name comes from the unusually firm leaf surface, which can retain markings scratched into it—although damaging the foliage isn't recommended.
Native to the Caribbean and tropical Americas, Clusia rosea naturally develops into a substantial tree but can be maintained at a much more manageable size when grown in a container indoors. Its dense foliage, sturdy stems, and clean silhouette give it a polished, modern appearance that works especially well as a statement floor plant.

Sun Requirements ▾
Autograph Tree performs best in bright indirect light to several hours of direct sunlight. A bright window helps maintain dense, sturdy growth, although plants should be gradually acclimated when moving into significantly stronger direct sun. Lower light may be tolerated but can result in slower or less compact growth. An LED grow light can help maintain healthy growth in spaces with limited natural light.
Watering Instructions ▾
Water thoroughly once the upper portion of the growing medium has dried, allowing excess water to drain freely. Avoid leaving the roots continuously wet or allowing the planter to sit in standing water. Its thick foliage provides some tolerance for brief periods of dryness, so it is generally safer to allow some drying rather than watering too frequently. A moisture meter can help determine whether moisture remains deeper in the container before watering.
Care Tips ▾
Grow Autograph Tree in a loose, well-draining potting medium that provides good aeration around the roots. Average household humidity is generally suitable, although consistent warmth and protection from very dry drafts are beneficial. Pruning can be used to maintain the desired shape and size. Clusia produces a sticky latex-like sap when cut or damaged, so gloves are recommended when pruning or handling damaged stems and foliage.
