Black Hawk Mountain Ash (Sorbus aucuparia ‘Black Hawk’)

Black Hawk Mountain Ash (Sorbus aucuparia ‘Black Hawk’)

Black Hawk Mountain Ash (Sorbus aucuparia ‘Black Hawk’) is a hardy ornamental tree prized for its attractive white spring flowers, vibrant orange-red berry clusters, and brilliant fall colour. This cold-tolerant tree provides outstanding multi-season interest and is an excellent choice for residential landscapes, shelterbelts, and Prairie garden designs.

In spring, clusters of creamy white flowers bloom across the branches and attract bees and pollinators to the garden. Throughout late summer and fall, the tree produces abundant clusters of bright orange-red berries that create strong ornamental impact while also attracting birds and wildlife. The finely textured green foliage turns shades of yellow, orange, and red in autumn, extending seasonal beauty well into fall.

Its upright oval growth habit creates a refined ornamental canopy that works beautifully as a specimen tree, boulevard planting, or accent in mixed landscape designs. Black Hawk Mountain Ash is especially valued for its excellent cold hardiness and ability to perform reliably in Prairie climates.

In Alberta, Black Hawk Mountain Ash performs best in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil and moderate watering during establishment. It adapts well to Prairie conditions and benefits from regular watering during prolonged hot dry periods.

Sun Requirements ▾

Full sun is ideal for the strongest growth, heaviest flowering, best berry production, and most vibrant fall colour. Plant in a location that receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. While the tree can tolerate light shade, flowering, fruit set, and autumn colour display may be reduced in lower light conditions.

Watering Instructions ▾

Moderate. Water regularly during establishment; mature trees tolerate short dry periods but perform best with supplemental watering during extended drought.

Care Tips ▾

Water deeply during establishment and apply mulch around the root zone to help conserve moisture and support healthy root development.
