Blue Oat Grass (Helictotrichon sempervirens)

Blue Oat Grass (Helictotrichon sempervirens)

Blue Oat Grass (Helictotrichon sempervirens) is a striking ornamental grass known for its steel-blue foliage and upright, clumping growth habit. This cool-toned grass provides strong architectural structure in the landscape, making it an excellent choice for borders, rock gardens, and modern planting designs.

The narrow, spiky blades form dense, rounded clumps that maintain their shape throughout the growing season. In early summer, tall flower spikes rise above the foliage, adding vertical interest and movement. The blue colouring contrasts beautifully with green, silver, and flowering perennials, making it a versatile design element.

In Alberta, Blue Oat Grass performs best in full sun and well-drained soil. It is drought-tolerant once established and thrives in dry, exposed conditions. Proper drainage is essential for winter survival, particularly in colder regions.

Sun Requirements ▾

Full sun. Plant in a location receiving at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Full sun produces the richest blue foliage colour, strongest growth, and best flowering performance.

Watering Instructions ▾

Low to Moderate. Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Blue Oat Grass is highly drought tolerant and requires only occasional deep watering during extended dry periods. Avoid overly wet or poorly drained soils.

Care Tips ▾

Cut back old foliage to approximately 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) above the ground in early spring before new growth begins. Divide mature clumps every four to five years if needed to rejuvenate the plant. A moisture meter is a great way to gauge your plant's moisture levels.
