Bunny Ears Cactus (Opuntia microdasys)

Bunny Ears Cactus, botanically known as Opuntia microdasys, is a distinctive cactus recognized for its flat, oval pads that grow in pairs and often resemble bunny ears. Instead of the long, obvious spines associated with many cacti, its pads are covered in evenly spaced clusters of tiny bristle-like glochids, giving the plant its characteristic dotted, almost fuzzy appearance.

Native to Mexico, Opuntia microdasys develops an upright, branching form as it matures and can produce new pads from existing growth. Its sculptural shape and compact size make it an excellent choice for sunny windowsills, cactus collections, and decorative planters. Mature specimens can produce yellow flowers when grown under favourable conditions, although flowering indoors is less common.

Sun Requirements ▾

Provide very bright light with several hours of direct sunlight for compact, healthy growth. A south- or west-facing window can be suitable indoors. Plants previously grown under lower-light conditions should be introduced to intense direct sunlight gradually to reduce the risk of sunburn. Insufficient light can result in stretched, weakened growth. An LED grow light can help maintain healthy growth in spaces with limited natural light, but choose a sufficiently powerful grow light for this high-light cactus.

Watering Instructions ▾

Water thoroughly and then allow the growing medium to dry completely or nearly completely before watering again. Bunny Ears Cactus stores moisture in its pads and is much more vulnerable to chronic overwatering than temporary dryness. Water considerably less frequently during periods of slow winter growth. A moisture meter can help check for moisture deeper in the pot, but the growing medium should also be physically checked before watering.

Care Tips ▾

Grow Bunny Ears Cactus in a coarse, fast-draining cactus or succulent growing medium and use a container with adequate drainage. Low to average household humidity is preferable, and good air circulation helps the growing medium dry appropriately. Avoid placing it in consistently damp conditions. Handle only when necessary and use appropriate protection because the glochids can easily penetrate skin.
