FlameThrower® Salsa Roja Coleus (Coleus scutellarioides ‘FlameThrower® Salsa Roja’)

FlameThrower® Salsa Roja Coleus (Coleus scutellarioides ‘FlameThrower® Salsa Roja’)

FlameThrower® Salsa Roja Coleus (Coleus scutellarioides ‘FlameThrower® Salsa Roja’) is a bold foliage annual celebrated for its fiery blend of red, burgundy, copper, and bronze tones. This vibrant variety delivers outstanding colour from spring until frost, making it a standout choice for containers, landscape beds, borders, and mixed planters.

The elongated, deeply serrated leaves display rich red centres accented by darker burgundy tones and warm bronze highlights. The dramatic foliage creates exceptional contrast in mixed plantings and pairs beautifully with chartreuse foliage plants, silver accents, ornamental grasses, and flowering annuals. Unlike many flowering plants, Salsa Roja provides continuous colour through its foliage alone, ensuring reliable visual impact all season long.

Part of the popular FlameThrower® series, Salsa Roja develops a compact, well-branched habit that remains dense and attractive without becoming overly large. Its colourful foliage intensifies throughout the growing season, creating an increasingly vibrant display as temperatures warm. The plant works equally well as a focal point in containers or as a colourful accent in landscape plantings.

In Alberta, FlameThrower® Salsa Roja performs exceptionally well as a summer annual, providing dependable colour and texture from planting time until frost.

Sun Requirements ▾

Part sun to full shade. Salsa Roja develops its richest colour in bright filtered light or locations receiving morning sun and afternoon shade. In Alberta, some morning sun helps intensify the red and bronze tones, while protection from harsh afternoon sun helps prevent leaf scorch and maintains foliage quality.

Watering Instructions ▾

Moderate. Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top portion of the soil begins to dry. Container-grown plants may require more frequent watering during hot summer weather.

Care Tips ▾

Pinch growing tips occasionally to encourage fuller branching and maintain a compact shape. Remove flower spikes if they appear to keep the plant focused on producing vibrant foliage. A moisture meter is a great way to gauge your plant's moisture levels.
