Beets (Garden Beets) (Beta vulgaris)

Beets (Garden Beets) (Beta vulgaris)

Beets (Beta vulgaris) are a versatile root vegetable grown for both their sweet, earthy roots and nutrient-rich leafy greens. Commonly known as garden beets or beetroot, they produce round to slightly elongated roots with deep red colouring, along with tender tops that can be harvested as beet greens.

Beets are a reliable cool-season crop that performs well in Alberta’s climate, especially in spring and fall. They are fast-growing and suitable for succession planting, allowing for multiple harvests throughout the season. Both the roots and greens are edible, making them a highly productive addition to home gardens.

This crop adapts well to a range of growing conditions and is suitable for garden beds, raised beds, and container growing, provided soil is loose and well-drained to allow proper root development.

Sun Requirements ▾

Full sun is ideal for the best root production and foliage growth. Plant in a location that receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Beets will tolerate light shade but produce the highest yields in sunny locations.

Watering Instructions ▾

Moderate. Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Regular watering promotes even root development and helps prevent woody or tough roots.

Care Tips ▾

Thin seedlings early to provide adequate spacing for root development. Harvest roots when they reach the desired size, as smaller beets are often the sweetest and most tender. A moisture meter is a great way to gauge your plant's moisture levels.
