Garden Mum (Chrysanthemum × morifolium)

Garden Mum (Chrysanthemum × morifolium)

Garden Mums (Chrysanthemum × morifolium) are classic flowering plants known for their dense growth and abundant blooms that bring rich seasonal colour to gardens, patios, entryways and outdoor containers. Available in a range of flower colours, mums create a full, colourful display as many summer-flowering plants begin to slow down.

Perfect for garden beds or seasonal planters, Garden Mums are especially popular for late-summer and fall displays. Their naturally mounded growth habit and masses of flowers make them an easy way to refresh outdoor spaces as the seasons begin to change. Bloom time and overall performance can vary depending on the cultivar, growing conditions and local weather.

Sun Requirements ▾

Garden mums perform best in full sun, ideally receiving at least six hours of direct sunlight per day. Abundant sunlight encourages dense growth and strong flowering. Plants can tolerate some light shade, but excessive shade may result in weaker growth and fewer flowers. Outdoors in southern Alberta, choose a bright location while ensuring container-grown plants do not dry excessively during sunny or windy conditions.

Watering Instructions ▾

Keep the soil consistently moist but not saturated, especially while plants are actively flowering. Check container-grown mums frequently because their dense foliage and root systems can use water quickly. Water thoroughly when the upper portion of the soil begins to dry, allowing excess water to drain freely. A moisture meter can be useful for checking moisture deeper in the growing medium rather than relying only on the appearance of the soil surface.

Care Tips ▾

Plant garden mums in fertile, well-draining soil and provide good air circulation around the foliage. Container-grown mums may dry considerably faster than plants established in garden beds, particularly during warm or windy fall weather. Removing faded flowers can help maintain a tidy appearance. Mums intended for possible overwintering should be planted into the garden early enough to establish a strong root system before winter rather than remaining in exposed containers.
