Genovese Basil (Ocimum basilicum)

Genovese Basil (Ocimum basilicum)

Genovese Basil, botanically classified as Ocimum basilicum, is the classic Italian basil variety prized for its large, tender leaves and rich, aromatic flavour. These plants are grown in-house by Urbane Eight using seeds from West Coast Seeds, ensuring healthy growth and strong, consistent flavour. Genovese basil is the traditional basil used in pesto and is widely valued for fresh culinary applications including sauces, salads, and garnishes.

This basil variety produces vibrant green leaves on upright stems and grows quickly under warm, bright conditions. It is well suited for container growing indoors or outdoors and can be harvested regularly to encourage bushy, productive growth. With proper care, Genovese basil remains lush and flavourful throughout the growing season.

Sun Requirements ▾

Bright light is essential for healthy growth and strong flavour. Genovese basil thrives in bright indirect light and benefits from several hours of direct sunlight each day. When grown outdoors, it performs best in full sun. Insufficient light may result in weak growth and reduced aroma.

Watering Instructions ▾

Watering should be done when the top portion of the soil begins to dry out. Genovese basil prefers evenly moist soil and does not tolerate drying out completely. Inconsistent watering can cause wilting or bitter-tasting leaves, while overwatering may lead to root issues. Watering frequency may increase during periods of active growth or warmer weather.

Care Tips ▾

Genovese basil prefers a warm, bright environment with good airflow and stable conditions. It performs best in a rich, well-draining soil that retains moisture without becoming waterlogged. Regular harvesting or pinching of the growing tips encourages fuller growth and delays flowering. Basil is sensitive to cold temperatures and should be protected from drafts or cool conditions.Genovese basil can be grown outdoors once the risk of frost has passed and nighttime temperatures remain warm. It performs well in garden beds or containers with well-draining soil and full sun exposure. Leaves should be harvested regularly by cutting stems just above a leaf node, which encourages continued growth and delays flowering. Harvesting before flowering helps maintain the best flavour.
