Ghost Dead Nettle (Lamium maculatum ‘Ghost’)

Ghost Dead Nettle (Lamium maculatum ‘Ghost’)

Ghost Dead Nettle is a shade-loving perennial groundcover valued for its striking silvery foliage and spreading habit. This cultivar of Lamium maculatum is known for its bright, almost metallic leaves that help illuminate darker garden spaces.

This herbaceous perennial forms low, trailing mats of foliage with prominent silver colouring and subtle green margins. In late spring to early summer, it produces small, hooded flowers in soft lavender to pale purple tones, adding seasonal interest and attracting pollinators.

Ghost Lamium is well-suited for groundcover applications, shaded borders, and underplanting around trees and shrubs. Its spreading growth helps suppress weeds while providing consistent texture and colour.

Sun Requirements ▾

Partial sun to partial shade. Morning sunlight with protection from intense afternoon sun provides excellent conditions for healthy growth and rich foliage colour. In Alberta's cooler climate, plants can tolerate additional sunlight when adequate moisture is available. Avoid extremely hot, exposed sites where the foliage may scorch.

Watering Instructions ▾

Moderate. Keep the soil evenly moist during establishment, allowing the upper layer to dry slightly between waterings. Once established, Northern Exposure™ Red tolerates brief dry periods but performs best with consistent moisture and good drainage. Avoid persistently wet or waterlogged soil.

Care Tips ▾

Plant with the crown at or slightly above soil level, as planting too deeply can encourage crown rot. Apply mulch around the root zone to help retain moisture and moderate soil temperatures, but keep mulch away from the crown. Remove damaged or tired foliage in early spring as fresh growth emerges. Good drainage is especially important during winter. A moisture meter is a great way to gauge your plant's moisture levels.
