Iron Cross Shamrock (Oxalis tetraphylla ‘Iron Cross’)

Iron Cross Shamrock (Oxalis tetraphylla ‘Iron Cross’)

The Iron Cross Shamrock, botanically known as Oxalis tetraphylla ‘Iron Cross’, is a distinctive foliage plant recognized for its bright green leaves marked with a dramatic burgundy cross at the centre of each leaflet. The four-part leaf structure and bold contrast give the plant a graphic, eye-catching appearance that stands out among traditional houseplants. Delicate pink flowers may appear during active growth, adding an extra layer of interest.

Native to Mexico, this Oxalis species grows from bulbs and follows a natural cycle of active growth and dormancy. During its growing season, it produces lush foliage and flowers readily with proper care. Understanding and respecting its natural rest period is key to long-term success, making it a rewarding plant for those who enjoy observing plant cycles.

Sun Requirements ▾

Bright, indirect light is ideal for Iron Cross Shamrock. It can tolerate some gentle direct sun, particularly in the morning, but harsh midday sunlight should be avoided as it can scorch the leaves. Insufficient light may result in slower growth and reduced leaf colour contrast. Consistent, filtered light supports strong foliage development and flowering.

Watering Instructions ▾

Watering should be done when the top portion of the soil begins to dry during the active growing period. Iron Cross Shamrock prefers evenly moist soil but does not tolerate standing water. Overwatering can cause bulb rot, while prolonged dryness during active growth may cause leaf drop. When the plant enters dormancy, watering should be significantly reduced until new growth resumes.

Care Tips ▾

Iron Cross Shamrock prefers a bright, stable environment and benefits from being planted in a well-draining potting mix that retains light moisture without becoming waterlogged. As a bulb-growing plant, it may naturally die back and enter dormancy, which is normal and not a sign of decline. During this time, foliage may yellow and fade. Allowing the plant to rest and resume growth on its own schedule is essential for continued health.
