Ivory Silk® Japanese Tree Lilac (Syringa reticulata ‘Ivory Silk®’)

Ivory Silk® Japanese Tree Lilac (Syringa reticulata ‘Ivory Silk®’)

Ivory Silk® Japanese Tree Lilac (Syringa reticulata ‘Ivory Silk®’) is a highly popular ornamental tree known for its large, creamy-white flower clusters and refined upright growth habit. Blooming in early summer after most traditional lilacs have finished flowering, this elegant tree provides valuable late-season fragrance and colour in the landscape.

The large panicles of fragrant white flowers attract pollinators and create a dramatic display against the dark green foliage. Its naturally symmetrical form and moderate size make it ideal for residential landscapes, boulevard planting, and focal points. The attractive bark also adds winter interest as the tree matures.

In Alberta, Ivory Silk® performs exceptionally well in full sun and is highly tolerant of urban conditions, cold temperatures, and Prairie climates. It prefers well-drained soil and requires minimal maintenance once established, making it one of the most dependable flowering trees for Canadian landscapes.

Sun Requirements ▾

Full sun. Plant in a location receiving at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Full sun encourages the heaviest flowering, healthiest foliage, and the strongest tree structure.

Watering Instructions ▾

Moderate. Water regularly during establishment to encourage deep root development. Once established, water deeply during extended dry periods while allowing the soil surface to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid prolonged waterlogged soil.

Care Tips ▾

Prune only as needed during late winter while the tree is dormant to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Apply mulch around the base to conserve soil moisture, regulate soil temperature, and protect the root system, keeping mulch away from the trunk. A moisture meter is a great way to gauge your plant's moisture levels.
