Jade Bonsai (Crassula ovata)

Jade Bonsai (Crassula ovata)

The Jade Bonsai, botanically known as Crassula ovata, is a classic bonsai choice admired for its thick, woody trunk and glossy, rounded green leaves. Often referred to as a money tree or jade plant, this bonsai form captures the look of a mature tree in miniature, with strong branching structure and a balanced, sculptural silhouette. Its clean lines and compact form make it a popular option for modern interiors and bonsai beginners alike.

Native to southern Africa, Crassula ovata is a succulent species adapted to bright light and dry conditions. When trained as a bonsai, it responds well to pruning and shaping, gradually developing character and structure over time. With proper care, a jade bonsai can be maintained for many years and becomes increasingly striking as it matures.

Sun Requirements ▾

Bright light is essential for healthy growth. Jade bonsai thrive in bright indirect light and can tolerate several hours of direct sun, particularly from a south- or west-facing window. Insufficient light may result in leggy growth and weaker structure. Strong, consistent lighting helps maintain compact growth and thick stems.

Watering Instructions ▾

Watering should be done only when the soil has dried out completely. Jade bonsai are highly drought tolerant and sensitive to overwatering, which is the most common cause of problems. Water thoroughly and allow all excess moisture to drain away. During the winter months, watering should be reduced significantly as growth slows.

Care Tips ▾

Jade bonsai prefer a bright, warm environment with good airflow and stable conditions. They perform best in a fast-draining bonsai or succulent soil mix that prevents moisture from lingering around the roots. Because jade stores water in its leaves and trunk, it is especially important to avoid compacted soil and containers without drainage. Pruning can be done periodically to maintain shape and encourage branching.
