Ladybugs for Aphid Control (Hippodamia convergens)

Ladybugs for Aphid Control (Hippodamia convergens)

Aphids are one of the most common and persistent pests found on plants, and one of the reasons they’re so successful is how quickly they reproduce. When conditions are right and food is abundant, aphids can reproduce without mating, giving live birth to already pregnant offspring. This allows populations to explode seemingly overnight.

One of the most effective and well-known ways to manage aphids naturally is by introducing their most recognizable predator: the ladybug.

The ladybugs available in our shop are Hippodamia convergens, a species native to North America and widely used in biological pest control. Both adult ladybugs and their larvae are active predators, capable of consuming large numbers of pests. A single ladybug can eat up to 50 aphids per day, making them a powerful ally when dealing with infestations.

While aphids are their primary food source, these ladybugs are generalist predators. In addition to aphids, they may also feed on other soft-bodied pests such as thrips, mites, whiteflies, mealybugs, and leafhoppers. Because of this, ladybugs are an excellent option for ongoing pest management or as a follow-up to other control methods when multiple pest issues are present.

Using ladybugs as a form of natural pest control supports a more balanced approach to plant care. Rather than relying on repeated chemical treatments, beneficial insects work by reducing pest populations naturally, helping protect plants without harming the surrounding environment.

After receiving your ladybugs, they can be released immediately or stored in the refrigerator for up to three to four weeks, following the expiry date on the package. For best results, ladybugs should be released at dusk, when temperatures are cooler and the insects are less active. Lightly misting the plants in the release area with water beforehand can help encourage them to stay and settle.

Ladybugs are a safe, effective, and environmentally friendly option for managing aphids and other common plant pests, whether you’re caring for houseplants, greenhouse plants, or outdoor gardens

Having ladybugs and other beneficial insects in your yard is wonderful, but it can be a challenge to keep them. Using a food source can be a great way to hold on to your beneficial insects like ladybugs and lacewings and direct them to certain areas of your yard. Ladybugs in particular require a liquid food source when released; it will increase their egg laying and your control.
