Living Stone Lithops (Lithops spp.)
Living Stone Lithops (Lithops spp.)
Living Stone Lithops (Lithops spp.) are fascinating miniature succulents famous for their remarkable resemblance to small stones or pebbles. Native to the arid regions of southern Africa, these plants have evolved thick paired leaves that mimic surrounding rocks as natural camouflage. Their unusual appearance and compact size make them highly sought after by succulent collectors and indoor plant enthusiasts.
Each Lithops plant consists of two thick fleshy leaves separated by a narrow fissure where new leaves and occasional daisy-like flowers emerge. The stone-like leaves store water, allowing the plant to survive in extremely dry environments. When grown indoors, Lithops are typically displayed in small pots or succulent arrangements where their unique textures and colours create a striking decorative feature.
Often referred to as “living stones” or “pebble plants,” Lithops follow a distinctive seasonal growth cycle where new leaf pairs gradually replace the old ones. Their sculptural form, slow growth, and remarkable camouflage make them an intriguing addition to succulent collections, terrariums, and modern plant displays.
