Myrtle Topiary (Myrtus communis)

Myrtle Topiary (Myrtus communis)

Myrtle Topiary (Myrtus communis) is a timeless evergreen prized for its neatly clipped topiary form, glossy aromatic foliage, and refined appearance. Carefully trained into classic shapes such as spheres, cones, or standards, this elegant plant adds year-round structure and sophistication to homes, offices, patios, and entryways. Its naturally dense branching and small, fragrant leaves make it one of the finest plants for decorative topiary displays.

The rich green foliage releases a pleasant herbal fragrance when gently brushed or pruned, adding another sensory element to its ornamental appeal. Under ideal growing conditions, mature plants may produce delicate white, star-shaped flowers with prominent stamens, followed by attractive bluish-black berries. While flowering is less common on regularly pruned topiary specimens, the handsome evergreen foliage remains its primary feature.

Myrtle Topiary performs beautifully in decorative pots, entrance displays, sunrooms, conservatories, offices, and bright indoor living spaces. During the summer months, it also makes an exceptional accent on patios, balconies, and covered outdoor entertaining areas. It pairs beautifully with lavender, rosemary, bay laurel, citrus trees, olive trees, and other Mediterranean plants to create elegant container gardens.

Sun Requirements ▾

Bright direct to bright indirect light. An LED grow light can help maintain healthy growth in spaces with limited natural light. Several hours of direct sunlight each day promote dense foliage, healthy branching, and the best overall appearance.

Watering Instructions ▾

Water when the top 2–5 cm (1–2 inches) of soil begins to dry while keeping the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged. Myrtle appreciates consistent moisture but should never be allowed to sit in standing water. Reduce watering slightly during winter while avoiding complete dryness.

Care Tips ▾

Trim lightly throughout the growing season to maintain its formal shape, avoiding heavy pruning during winter. Rotate the container regularly to encourage even growth and feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced fertilizer. A moisture meter is a great way to gauge your plant's moisture levels.
