Nufar Basil (Ocimum basilicum ‘Nufar’)

Nufar Basil (Ocimum basilicum ‘Nufar’)

Nufar Basil (Ocimum basilicum ‘Nufar’) is a premium Genovese-type basil prized for its large, aromatic leaves, exceptional sweet basil flavour, and outstanding disease resistance. Renowned for its high resistance to Fusarium wilt, Nufar is one of the most dependable basil varieties for home gardeners, producing vigorous growth and abundant harvests throughout the growing season. Its rich, spicy-sweet flavour makes it an ideal choice for pesto, pasta dishes, pizza, salads, sandwiches, sauces, soups, and countless Mediterranean recipes.

The large, glossy green leaves are highly fragrant and can be harvested continuously, encouraging the plant to produce even more fresh growth. During summer, plants produce delicate white flower spikes that attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators. For maximum leaf production and the best culinary quality, flower buds should be pinched off as they appear.

Nufar Basil thrives in warm, sunny locations with fertile, well-drained soil. It performs exceptionally well in herb gardens, raised beds, patio containers, window boxes, and kitchen gardens, providing a reliable supply of fresh basil throughout the season.

In Alberta, Nufar Basil grows vigorously from late spring until the first autumn frost, making it an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced gardeners.

Sun Requirements ▾

Full sun. Plant in a location receiving at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Full sun promotes vigorous growth, abundant foliage, and the strongest flavour.

Watering Instructions ▾

Moderate. Keep the soil consistently moist but well-drained. Water regularly, particularly during hot weather and when plants are grown in containers. Avoid allowing the soil to dry out completely or remain waterlogged.

Care Tips ▾

Harvest stems regularly to encourage dense, bushy growth. Pinch growing tips frequently and remove flower buds as they develop to maximize leaf production and extend the harvest season. A moisture meter is a great way to gauge your plant's moisture levels.
