Peperomia ‘Rugella’ (Peperomia rugella)

Peperomia ‘Rugella’ (Peperomia rugella)

Peperomia ‘Rugella’ (Peperomia rugella), often referred to as Peperomia ‘Rubella’, is a delicate trailing houseplant known for its small, oval green leaves and contrasting reddish stems and undersides. The fine, cascading growth habit creates a soft, textured appearance, making it ideal for hanging planters or shelf displays.

Native to tropical regions of Central and South America, this peperomia thrives in warm, humid environments and adapts well to indoor conditions. As a semi-succulent species, it stores some moisture in its foliage, allowing it to tolerate brief periods of dryness. Its compact leaves and trailing stems give it a light, airy presence in plant arrangements.

Peperomia ‘Rugella’ is cultivated for its trailing form and subtle color contrast. Its manageable size and gentle growth habit make it a versatile addition to indoor plant collections.

Sun Requirements ▾

Prefers bright, indirect light for the best color and growth. Can tolerate medium light, but leaves may lose vibrancy. Avoid harsh direct sun, which can scorch its tiny leaves.

Watering Instructions ▾

Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry. Prefers to stay slightly on the drier side—overwatering can cause root rot. Use the “soak and dry” method: water thoroughly, then allow excess water to drain.

Care Tips ▾

Needs a well-draining potting mix, ideally a blend of peat, perlite, and orchid bark. Fertilize every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer with a diluted liquid houseplant fertilizer. No feeding needed in fall and winter.
