Proven Winners® Black Lace® Elderberry (Sambucus nigra ‘Black Lace’)

Proven Winners® Black Lace® Elderberry (Sambucus nigra ‘Black Lace’)

Proven Winners® Black Lace® Elderberry (Sambucus nigra ‘Black Lace’) is a dramatic ornamental shrub prized for its finely cut, deep burgundy-black foliage and soft pink flower clusters. The lace-like foliage gives the plant an elegant, almost Japanese maple-like appearance while providing bold contrast in mixed shrub borders and focal plantings.

In early summer, fragrant pink flowers appear against the dark foliage, attracting pollinators and adding another layer of ornamental interest. Later in the season, dark berries may develop, providing additional wildlife value. The arching growth habit creates a graceful, layered appearance that works beautifully in modern, cottage, and naturalized landscapes.

In Alberta, Black Lace® Elderberry performs best in full sun to partial shade with well-drained soil and moderate moisture. It is cold-hardy and responds well to pruning, which can help maintain size and encourage vigorous new growth with the darkest foliage colour.

Sun Requirements ▾

Full sun to part shade. Plant in a location receiving at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for the richest dark foliage colour and best flowering. Light afternoon shade is tolerated, particularly in warmer climates.

Watering Instructions ▾

Moderate. Water regularly during establishment to encourage a strong root system. Once established, water deeply during prolonged dry periods while allowing the soil surface to dry slightly between waterings. Consistent moisture promotes the healthiest foliage and flowering.

Care Tips ▾

Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins to maintain size and encourage vigorous new stems with the richest foliage colour. Remove older stems every few years to rejuvenate mature plants. If fruit production is desired, plant another compatible European elderberry nearby for improved cross-pollination. A moisture meter is a great way to gauge your plant's moisture levels.
