Proven Winners® Puffer Fish® Hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata)

Proven Winners® Puffer Fish® Hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata)

Proven Winners® Puffer Fish® Hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata ‘NCHP1’) is a compact deciduous flowering shrub prized for its exceptionally full, oversized panicle blooms and reliable performance. Part of the Proven Winners® collection, this improved panicle hydrangea produces massive, densely packed flower heads that emerge a brilliant pure white in early to midsummer. As the season progresses, the blooms gradually develop soft green and blush pink tones, providing months of changing colour and exceptional garden interest.

One of the defining features of Puffer Fish® is its abundance of large sterile florets, which create remarkably full, cloud-like flower heads with very little space between the blooms. The sturdy upright stems easily support the large flowers without flopping, even after heavy rain, making this variety ideal for formal landscapes and fresh-cut flower arrangements.

Its naturally compact, rounded habit makes Puffer Fish® an excellent choice for foundation plantings, mixed shrub borders, specimen plantings, flowering hedges, and decorative containers. The long-lasting blooms attract bees and butterflies while adding elegance to the landscape from early summer through autumn. It pairs beautifully with ornamental grasses, coneflowers, salvia, spirea, ninebark, and other sun-loving shrubs and perennials.

In Alberta, Proven Winners® Puffer Fish® Hydrangea is exceptionally hardy and dependable, flowering reliably each year on new wood for outstanding summer colour.

Sun Requirements ▾

Full sun to part shade. Plant in a location receiving at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for the strongest stems, fullest blooms, and best flower colour. Light afternoon shade is beneficial in hotter locations.

Watering Instructions ▾

Moderate. Keep the soil consistently moist during establishment. Once established, water deeply during extended dry periods, particularly while the plant is actively flowering. Avoid prolonged waterlogged conditions.

Care Tips ▾

Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins, as this hydrangea flowers on new wood. Remove weak or damaged stems to encourage vigorous growth and larger flower clusters. Apply mulch around the base to conserve moisture and protect the root system. A moisture meter is a great way to gauge your plant's moisture levels.
