Proven Winners® Sgt. Pepper® Dogwood (Cornus alba)

Proven Winners® Sgt. Pepper® Dogwood (Cornus alba)

Proven Winners® Sgt. Pepper® Dogwood (Cornus alba 'Sgt. Pepper®') is an exceptional four-season ornamental shrub prized for its colourful variegated foliage, striking red stems, and outstanding landscape performance. Throughout spring and summer, the attractive green leaves are edged in creamy white, creating a bright, elegant display that stands out in garden beds and mixed borders. As autumn arrives, the foliage develops beautiful shades of pink, burgundy, and purple before dropping to reveal vivid cherry-red stems that provide brilliant winter colour.

This compact, upright selection offers excellent branching and a dense growth habit, making it an outstanding specimen or hedge plant. Clusters of small creamy-white flowers appear in late spring, attracting bees and other beneficial pollinators. These are often followed by small white berries that provide additional seasonal interest and are enjoyed by songbirds.

Proven Winners® Sgt. Pepper® Dogwood is an excellent choice for foundation plantings, mixed shrub borders, privacy screens, rain gardens, and naturalized landscapes. It pairs beautifully with hydrangeas, ninebarks, spireas, ornamental grasses, evergreens, and flowering perennials, providing outstanding colour and structure throughout every season.

Sun Requirements ▾

Full sun to partial shade. Plant in a location receiving at least 4–6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Full sun produces the brightest stem colour and best variegation, while partial shade is well tolerated, particularly in warmer locations.

Watering Instructions ▾

Moderate. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep root system. Once established, Proven Winners® Sgt. Pepper® Dogwood tolerates occasional wet conditions but performs best in consistently moist, well-drained soil. Water deeply during extended dry periods.

Care Tips ▾

Prune out approximately one-third of the oldest stems in late winter or early spring to encourage vigorous new growth, as the youngest stems display the brightest red winter colour. Apply mulch around the root zone to conserve moisture and protect roots during Alberta's fluctuating temperatures. Fertilize lightly each spring with a balanced slow-release fertilizer. A moisture meter is a great way to gauge your plant's moisture levels.
