Tiny Wine® Ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius)

Tiny Wine® Ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius)

Tiny Wine® Ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius ‘SMPOTW’) is a compact deciduous shrub prized for its rich burgundy-purple foliage, abundant clusters of soft white flowers, and refined, upright habit. A Proven Winners® introduction, this dwarf selection offers all the beauty of larger ninebarks in a smaller, landscape-friendly size that fits easily into residential gardens and foundation plantings.

In late spring to early summer, clusters of delicate white flowers cover the shrub, creating a striking contrast against the deep wine-coloured foliage. The nectar-rich blooms attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators before developing into attractive red seed capsules that provide additional seasonal interest. Throughout the growing season, the finely textured foliage maintains its rich burgundy colour before developing warm bronze tones in autumn. As the shrub matures, its attractive exfoliating bark adds valuable winter interest.

Its naturally dense, upright mounded habit makes Tiny Wine® an outstanding choice for foundation plantings, mixed shrub borders, low hedges, mass plantings, cottage gardens, and pollinator landscapes. It pairs beautifully with golden foliage shrubs, ornamental grasses, hydrangeas, spirea, coneflowers, and salvia, creating bold colour contrast throughout the season.

In Alberta, Tiny Wine® Ninebark is exceptionally hardy and provides reliable colour, outstanding disease resistance, and four-season landscape appeal with very little maintenance.

Sun Requirements ▾

Full sun to part shade. Plant in a location receiving at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for the richest burgundy foliage colour and best flowering. Light afternoon shade is tolerated but may result in slightly greener foliage.

Watering Instructions ▾

Low to Moderate. Water regularly during establishment to develop a healthy root system. Once established, Tiny Wine® is drought tolerant and requires only occasional deep watering during extended dry periods. Avoid prolonged waterlogged soil.

Care Tips ▾

Prune immediately after flowering if shaping is desired, as next year's flower buds develop on older wood. Remove a few of the oldest stems every few years to encourage vigorous new growth and maintain a dense habit. A moisture meter is a great way to gauge your plant's moisture levels.
