Red Nancy Dead Nettle (Lamium maculatum ‘Red Nancy’)

Red Nancy Dead Nettle (Lamium maculatum ‘Red Nancy’)

Red Nancy Dead Nettle is a shade-loving perennial groundcover valued for its bright silver foliage and vibrant pink flowers. This cultivar of Lamium maculatum is known for its strong contrast between foliage and blooms, making it a standout in shaded landscape plantings.

This herbaceous perennial forms low, spreading mats of silver leaves edged with green. In late spring to early summer, it produces clusters of rosy-pink, hooded flowers that rise above the foliage, attracting pollinators such as bees. The combination of bright foliage and colourful blooms provides extended visual interest.

Red Nancy Lamium is well-suited for groundcover applications, shaded borders, and underplanting around trees and shrubs. Its spreading habit helps suppress weeds and fill in garden spaces effectively.

Sun Requirements ▾

Partial shade to shade. Morning sun, dappled sunlight, or bright filtered light encourages dense growth and attractive foliage colouring. Protection from intense afternoon sunlight is recommended, particularly in hot, exposed locations, as excessive sun can scorch the foliage. Its tolerance of lower light makes Red Nancy especially useful for brightening difficult shaded areas.

Watering Instructions ▾

Low to moderate. Keep the soil consistently moist while plants become established, then allow the upper layer to dry slightly between waterings. Once established, Red Nancy tolerates occasional dry periods, particularly when grown in shade. Avoid persistently saturated or poorly drained soil.

Care Tips ▾

Trim plants lightly after the main flowering period if growth becomes untidy or to encourage a fresh flush of foliage. Established clumps can be divided in spring or fall to control their spread or create additional plantings. Allow adequate room for the trailing stems to expand naturally. A moisture meter is a great way to gauge your plant's moisture levels.
