Sedge ColorGrass® Red Rooster (Carex buchananii ‘Red Rooster’)

Sedge ColorGrass® Red Rooster (Carex buchananii ‘Red Rooster’) is a distinctive ornamental sedge prized for its slender copper-red foliage, graceful fountain-like habit, and exceptional texture. This unique grass-like perennial brings warm colour and movement to containers, borders, rock gardens, and modern landscape designs throughout the growing season.

The narrow, arching leaves emerge in shades of bronze, cinnamon, and copper-red, developing richer tones as the season progresses. Unlike traditional green ornamental grasses, Red Rooster provides a striking architectural element that contrasts beautifully with flowering perennials, colourful annuals, and evergreen shrubs. Its fine texture softens hardscape features while adding year-round visual interest to garden compositions.

ColorGrass® Red Rooster forms a tidy, upright clump with gently cascading foliage that sways gracefully in the breeze. Its compact size makes it ideal for mixed containers, pathway edging, mass plantings, and accent positions where its unique foliage colour can be fully appreciated. The plant remains attractive throughout the season with very little maintenance.

In Alberta, Red Rooster is often used as a dramatic foliage accent in seasonal containers and landscape plantings, providing texture and colour from spring through fall.

Sun Requirements ▾

Full sun to partial shade. The richest copper-red foliage colour develops in locations receiving several hours of direct sunlight each day. In Alberta, morning sun or full sun with adequate moisture encourages the strongest colouration and densest growth. Light afternoon shade is beneficial in particularly hot or exposed locations, while partial shade helps maintain healthy foliage throughout the season.

Watering Instructions ▾

Moderate. Water regularly during establishment. Once established, maintain evenly moist soil while avoiding prolonged waterlogged conditions. Plants appreciate consistent moisture during hot summer weather.

Care Tips ▾

Remove any winter-damaged foliage in early spring before new growth emerges. Divide mature clumps every few years if desired to maintain vigour and create additional plants.
