Sem False Spirea (Sorbaria sorbifolia ‘Sem’)

Sem False Spirea (Sorbaria sorbifolia ‘Sem’)

Sem False Spirea (Sorbaria sorbifolia ‘Sem’) is a hardy deciduous shrub prized for its colourful fern-like foliage, creamy white flower plumes, and compact upright habit. This easy-care shrub delivers season-long colour and texture, making it an excellent choice for borders, foundation plantings, naturalized landscapes, and Prairie garden designs.

New foliage emerges in brilliant shades of pink, bronze, and copper before maturing to fresh green throughout summer. In mid to late summer, airy creamy white flower plumes rise above the foliage and attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators to the garden. The finely textured foliage creates a soft feathery appearance that resembles astilbe or fern foliage, adding unique texture to mixed landscape plantings.

Compared to traditional false spirea varieties, ‘Sem’ remains more compact and controlled while still offering strong seasonal colour changes and excellent cold hardiness. Its naturally dense growth habit makes it useful for mass plantings, erosion control, and low-maintenance landscape designs.

In Alberta, Sem False Spirea performs best in full sun to partial shade with fertile, well-drained soil and moderate watering during establishment. Once mature, it tolerates Prairie conditions well and adapts to a wide range of soils while remaining highly cold hardy.
