Shogun™ Japanese Tree Lilac (Syringa reticulata ‘Shogun™’)

Shogun™ Japanese Tree Lilac (Syringa reticulata ‘Shogun™’)

Shogun™ Japanese Tree Lilac (Syringa reticulata ‘Shogun™’) is a compact ornamental flowering tree prized for its creamy-white fragrant blooms and strong upright form. Blooming in early summer, this Japanese tree lilac provides season-extending fragrance and visual interest after spring flowering trees have finished.

The large clusters of fragrant flowers attract pollinators while contrasting beautifully against the rich green foliage. Compared to larger Japanese tree lilacs, Shogun™ maintains a more compact size, making it ideal for smaller residential landscapes, urban gardens, and boulevard planting.

In Alberta, Shogun™ performs exceptionally well in full sun and tolerates Prairie winters, urban conditions, and a variety of soil types. Its strong branching structure and cold hardiness make it a reliable ornamental tree for Canadian landscapes.

Sun Requirements ▾

Full sun. Plant in a location receiving at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Full sun promotes abundant flowering, healthy foliage, and a dense, symmetrical canopy.

Watering Instructions ▾

Moderate. Water regularly during establishment to encourage deep root development. Once established, water deeply during extended dry periods while allowing the soil surface to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid consistently waterlogged soil.

Care Tips ▾

Prune only as needed during late winter while the tree is dormant to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Apply mulch around the root zone to help conserve moisture, moderate soil temperatures, and protect developing roots, keeping mulch several centimetres away from the trunk. A moisture meter is a great way to gauge your plant's moisture levels.
