Silver Dust Dusty Miller (Senecio cineraria)

Silver Dust Dusty Miller (Senecio cineraria)

Silver Dust Dusty Miller (Jacobaea maritima 'Silver Dust'), formerly known as Senecio cineraria, is one of the most popular ornamental foliage plants for adding brilliant silver colour and soft texture to gardens and containers. Its deeply cut, velvety leaves form a dense, compact mound that beautifully complements flowering annuals and perennials throughout the growing season. The bright silver foliage remains attractive from planting until frost, making it an essential accent plant for colourful garden displays.

Unlike flowering annuals that rely on blooms for interest, Silver Dust provides season-long structure, contrast, and elegance with its finely textured foliage. Its drought tolerance, heat resistance, and ability to thrive in challenging conditions make it an exceptionally reliable landscape performer. Although mature plants may produce small yellow flowers, many gardeners remove the flower stalks to maintain the plant's tidy appearance and encourage fuller foliage growth.

Silver Dust Dusty Miller performs beautifully in mixed patio containers, hanging baskets, flower beds, borders, edging plantings, memorial gardens, and landscape displays. It pairs exceptionally well with petunias, begonias, calibrachoa, salvia, marigolds, coleus, geraniums, and ornamental grasses, creating striking colour combinations that highlight both silver foliage and vibrant blooms.

Sun Requirements ▾

Full sun to partial shade. Plant in a location receiving at least 6 hours of sunlight daily for the brightest silver foliage and most compact growth. In hotter locations, light afternoon shade is well tolerated while still maintaining excellent foliage colour.

Watering Instructions ▾

Low to moderate. Water thoroughly when the top few centimetres of soil become dry. Once established, Silver Dust Dusty Miller is highly drought tolerant and prefers slightly drier soil over consistently wet conditions.

Care Tips ▾

Pinch or remove flower stems if they appear to encourage the plant to direct its energy into producing dense, attractive foliage. Plant in well-draining soil and fertilize lightly throughout the growing season, as excessive fertilizer may reduce the intensity of the silver colouring. A moisture meter is a great way to gauge your plant's moisture levels.
