Sonata Mix Cosmos (Cosmos bipinnatus ‘Sonata Mix’)

Sonata Mix Cosmos (Cosmos bipinnatus ‘Sonata Mix’)

Sonata Mix Cosmos (Cosmos bipinnatus ‘Sonata Mix’) is a compact, free-flowering annual that delivers an abundance of cheerful daisy-like blooms throughout the summer. Unlike taller cosmos varieties, the Sonata series was bred for a shorter, bushier habit, making it an excellent choice for containers, borders, pollinator gardens, and smaller landscape spaces.

The large flowers appear in a beautiful blend of white, soft pink, rose, and deep crimson shades, creating a colourful display from early summer until frost. The blooms rise above finely textured, fern-like foliage and attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators throughout the season. Their bright colours and airy appearance bring movement and charm to cottage gardens and mixed annual plantings.

Sonata Mix develops a dense, well-branched habit that remains tidy while producing continuous waves of blooms. The flowers also make excellent cut flowers, allowing gardeners to enjoy fresh bouquets indoors while encouraging even more blooms outdoors.

In Alberta, Sonata Mix Cosmos performs exceptionally well in sunny garden locations, providing months of vibrant colour and pollinator activity from planting time until frost.

Sun Requirements ▾

Full sun is essential for the best flowering performance. Plant in a location that receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Bright sunlight encourages strong stems, abundant blooms, and compact growth. Cosmos thrive in warm, sunny locations and continue flowering heavily throughout the summer.

Watering Instructions ▾

Low to Moderate. Water regularly during establishment. Once established, cosmos are relatively drought tolerant and perform best when allowed to dry slightly between waterings.

Care Tips ▾

Deadhead spent blooms regularly to encourage continuous flowering throughout the season. Avoid excessive fertilization, which may promote foliage growth at the expense of flowers. A moisture meter is a great way to gauge your plant's moisture levels.
