Sunflor® Sofia Dwarf Hardy Carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus ‘Sunflor Sofia’)

Sunflor® Sofia Dwarf Hardy Carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus ‘Sunflor Sofia’)

Sunflor® Sofia Dwarf Hardy Carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus ‘Sunflor Sofia’) is a compact dianthus variety grown for its fragrant flowers, tidy habit, and suitability for containers and sunny garden beds. As part of the Sunflor® series, this dwarf hardy carnation is selected for strong blooming performance in a smaller form, making it especially useful for patios, edging, rock gardens, balcony planters, and front-of-border plantings.

This dianthus produces showy flowers above dense, blue-green foliage that remains attractive throughout the growing season. The compact shape makes it easy to incorporate into mixed containers or small-space landscapes, while the classic carnation-like fragrance adds extra appeal near walkways, entrances, and seating areas.

In Alberta, Sunflor® Sofia performs best in full sun and well-drained soil. Dianthus prefers conditions that are not overly wet, especially through winter, so drainage is essential for reliable perennial performance. Once established, it tolerates short dry periods and requires relatively little maintenance beyond deadheading and occasional trimming.

Sun Requirements ▾

Full sun. Plant in a location receiving at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Full sun promotes compact growth, abundant flowering, and the strongest fragrance.

Watering Instructions ▾

Low to Moderate. Water regularly during establishment. Once established, allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid consistently wet conditions, which can lead to crown or root rot.

Care Tips ▾

Deadhead spent flowers regularly to encourage repeat blooming and maintain a tidy appearance. Shear plants lightly after the main flush of flowers to stimulate fresh foliage and additional blooms. Avoid planting in poorly drained soil, particularly during winter. A moisture meter is a great way to gauge your plant's moisture levels.
