Vermillionaire® Large Firecracker Plant (Cuphea hybrid ‘Vermillionaire®’)

Vermillionaire® Large Firecracker Plant (Cuphea hybrid ‘Vermillionaire®’)

Vermillionaire® Large Firecracker Plant (Cuphea hybrid ‘Vermillionaire®’) is an award-winning flowering annual celebrated for its nonstop display of fiery orange blooms and unmatched ability to attract hummingbirds. This exceptional variety produces hundreds of tubular flowers from late spring until frost, creating a continuous source of colour and nectar throughout the growing season.

The bright orange flowers are tipped with yellow and held above glossy green foliage, creating the appearance of tiny firecrackers bursting across the plant. Hummingbirds are irresistibly drawn to the nectar-rich blooms, often visiting repeatedly throughout the day. Bees and butterflies also benefit from the abundant flowers, making Vermillionaire® one of the best pollinator plants available for containers and garden beds.

Unlike many flowering annuals, Vermillionaire® blooms continuously without deadheading. Its vigorous, mounded growth habit creates a full, attractive plant that works beautifully in patio containers, hanging baskets, landscape beds, and mixed planters. The combination of easy care, heat tolerance, and nonstop flowering has made it a favourite among gardeners across North America.

In Alberta, Vermillionaire® performs exceptionally well as a summer annual, providing reliable colour, pollinator activity, and season-long garden interest from planting time until frost.

Sun Requirements ▾

Full sun to part sun. For the best flowering performance, provide at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Bright sunlight encourages dense growth, abundant blooms, and maximum hummingbird activity. In Alberta, Vermillionaire® performs exceptionally well in sunny garden locations and tolerates summer heat with ease. Light afternoon shade is tolerated but may slightly reduce flower production.

Watering Instructions ▾

Moderate. Water when the top portion of the soil begins to dry. Keep soil evenly moist but not saturated. Container-grown plants may require more frequent watering during hot summer weather.

Care Tips ▾

No deadheading is required, as the plant continuously produces new flowers throughout the season. Fertilize regularly during active growth to encourage maximum flowering. A moisture meter is a great way to gauge your plant's moisture levels.
