Proven Winners® Pinky Winky® Hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata)

Proven Winners® Pinky Winky® Hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata)

Proven Winners® Pinky Winky® Hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata 'DVPpinky') is an award-winning panicle hydrangea celebrated for its enormous two-toned flower heads and exceptional hardiness. Blooming from mid-summer into fall, the large conical flower panicles emerge creamy white before gradually developing vibrant rosy-pink colouring from the base upward while fresh white florets continue opening at the tips. This creates a dramatic two-tone effect that lasts for weeks, making Pinky Winky® one of the most recognizable and sought-after hydrangeas for Canadian landscapes.

Unlike many older hydrangea varieties, Proven Winners® Pinky Winky® develops exceptionally strong, sturdy stems that hold its massive flower heads upright without flopping, even after rain. As autumn arrives, the blooms deepen to rich pink and antique rose shades while the foliage turns soft yellow before dropping, leaving attractive flower heads that provide winter interest if left on the plant.

Proven Winners® Pinky Winky® Hydrangea is an outstanding choice for foundation plantings, mixed shrub borders, privacy screens, cottage gardens, and specimen plantings. It pairs beautifully with ornamental grasses, spireas, ninebarks, dogwoods, coneflowers, salvias, and other hardy perennials, creating elegant four-season landscapes filled with colour, texture, and structure.

Sun Requirements ▾

Full sun to partial shade. Plant in a location receiving at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for the strongest stems, largest blooms, and best pink flower colour. Light afternoon shade is beneficial in particularly hot locations.

Watering Instructions ▾

Moderate. Water deeply and regularly during the first growing season to establish a healthy root system. Once established, provide supplemental watering during prolonged dry periods, keeping the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged.

Care Tips ▾

Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins, as this hydrangea flowers on new wood. Remove any damaged or weak branches to encourage vigorous growth and larger flower panicles. Apply mulch around the base to conserve soil moisture and insulate the roots during Alberta's changing temperatures. Fertilize in early spring with a balanced slow-release shrub fertilizer. A moisture meter is a great way to gauge your plant's moisture levels.
