Angelonia AngelFlare® Black (Angelonia angustifolia ‘AngelFlare® Black’)

Angelonia AngelFlare® Black (Angelonia angustifolia ‘AngelFlare® Black’)

Angelonia AngelFlare® Black (Angelonia angustifolia ‘AngelFlare® Black’) is a bold flowering annual prized for its exceptionally dark purple blooms, upright growth habit, and outstanding heat tolerance. Often referred to as a summer snapdragon, this striking variety delivers rich, near-black flower spikes that create dramatic contrast in containers, garden beds, and mixed landscape plantings.

From late spring until frost, tall flower spikes emerge continuously above lush green foliage, producing masses of deep violet-purple blooms that appear almost black in certain lighting conditions. The flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators while providing season-long colour and vertical interest. Their unique colouring pairs beautifully with silver foliage plants, bright annuals, and ornamental grasses.

AngelFlare® Black forms a sturdy, well-branched plant that remains attractive throughout the growing season without extensive maintenance. Its excellent tolerance to heat, humidity, and summer weather makes it a dependable performer in both containers and landscape plantings. Unlike many flowering annuals, Angelonia continues blooming through periods of intense heat when other plants may slow down.

In Alberta, AngelFlare® Black performs exceptionally well as a summer annual, providing continuous colour and dramatic garden impact from planting time until frost.

Sun Requirements ▾

Full sun is ideal for maximum flowering, strongest stems, and the richest bloom colour. Plant in a location that receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Bright sunlight promotes abundant flower production and compact growth. AngelFlare® Black thrives in hot summer conditions and maintains excellent performance throughout periods of heat and humidity.

Watering Instructions ▾

Moderate. Water regularly during establishment and allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings. Container-grown plants may require more frequent watering during hot weather.

Care Tips ▾

Minimal deadheading is required, as plants continue producing new flower spikes throughout the season. Fertilize regularly to encourage vigorous growth and maximum flowering. A moisture meter is a great way to gauge your plant's moisture levels.
