Aurora Honeyberry (Lonicera caerulea ‘Aurora’)

Aurora Honeyberry (Lonicera caerulea ‘Aurora’)

Aurora Honeyberry (Lonicera caerulea ‘Aurora’) is a highly productive cold-hardy fruit shrub prized for its large sweet blue berries, early harvest season, and exceptional Prairie hardiness. Also known as haskap, this edible shrub produces elongated antioxidant-rich berries with a flavour often compared to a blend of blueberry, raspberry, and black currant.

In spring, small pale yellow flowers appear along the branches and tolerate late frosts exceptionally well, allowing reliable fruit production even in colder climates. The berries ripen very early in the season, often before strawberries, making Aurora Honeyberry one of the earliest edible harvests in Canadian gardens. Its upright growth habit and lush green foliage also provide ornamental value in edible landscapes and mixed shrub plantings.

Aurora is widely recognized for producing some of the largest and sweetest honeyberries available and performs best when planted alongside another compatible honeyberry variety for cross-pollination and heavier fruit set.

In Alberta, Aurora Honeyberry performs best in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil and moderate moisture. It thrives in Prairie climates and tolerates extreme winter cold while remaining highly reliable and low maintenance once established.

Sun Requirements ▾

Full sun is ideal for maximum flowering, fruit production, and berry sweetness. Plant in a location that receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. While Aurora can tolerate partial shade, full sun promotes stronger growth, larger harvests, and the highest fruit quality.

Watering Instructions ▾

Moderate. Keep soil consistently moist during establishment and fruit development. Mature plants are relatively drought tolerant but produce the best harvests with regular watering.

Care Tips ▾

Plant with a compatible honeyberry variety nearby to ensure successful pollination and maximum fruit production. Apply mulch around the root zone to conserve moisture and reduce weed competition.
