Sun Requirements ▾

Full sun. Plant where Autumn Joy receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. Abundant sunshine encourages sturdy stems, compact growth, abundant flowers, and the best overall performance. Light partial shade can be tolerated, but excessive shade may cause weaker stems and reduced flowering.

Watering Instructions ▾

Low. Water regularly during the first growing season while plants establish their root systems, allowing the soil to dry somewhat between waterings. Once established, Autumn Joy is highly drought tolerant and typically requires supplemental watering only during prolonged hot, dry periods. Avoid consistently wet or waterlogged soil.

Care Tips ▾

Leave the dried flower heads standing through fall and winter for added seasonal interest, then cut old stems back near ground level in early spring before new growth emerges. Avoid excessive fertilizer or overly rich soil, which can cause stems to become weak and floppy. Plants can be divided in spring every few years if clumps become overcrowded.
