Bailey Select Schubert Chokecherry (Prunus virginiana ‘Bailey Select’)

Bailey Select Schubert Chokecherry (Prunus virginiana ‘Bailey Select’)

Bailey Select Schubert Chokecherry (Prunus virginiana ‘Bailey Select’) is a hardy ornamental tree prized for its dramatic purple foliage, fragrant white spring blossoms, and excellent Prairie adaptability. This improved chokecherry selection provides striking seasonal colour and ornamental value in residential landscapes, shelterbelts, and feature plantings throughout the growing season.

In spring, clusters of fragrant white flowers cover the branches and attract bees and pollinators while creating a beautiful early-season display. As the season progresses, the foliage transitions from green to rich burgundy-purple, creating dramatic contrast in the landscape. Small dark ornamental berries may develop later in the season and provide food for birds and wildlife.

Its upright rounded growth habit makes Bailey Select Schubert Chokecherry an excellent shade tree and landscape accent for Prairie gardens and urban environments. The colourful foliage pairs beautifully with evergreen shrubs, ornamental grasses, and flowering perennials in mixed landscape designs.

In Alberta, Bailey Select Schubert Chokecherry performs best in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil and moderate watering during establishment. It thrives in Prairie climates with excellent cold hardiness and adaptability to a wide range of soil conditions.

Sun Requirements ▾

Full sun is essential for the richest purple foliage colour and strongest flowering performance. Plant in a location that receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. While the tree can tolerate light shade, foliage colour may remain greener and flowering may be reduced in lower light conditions.

Watering Instructions ▾

Moderate. Water regularly during establishment. Mature trees are adaptable but benefit from supplemental watering during prolonged dry periods.

Care Tips ▾

Prune in late winter or early spring to remove damaged branches and maintain a strong, attractive canopy structure.
