Bath Loofah Gourd Seeds by Renee’s Garden (Luffa aegyptiaca)

Bath Loofah Gourd Seeds by Renee’s Garden (Luffa aegyptiaca)

Bath Loofah Gourd (Luffa aegyptiaca) is a vigorous warm-season vine grown for its unique fibrous interior that forms natural bath sponges when mature. The plants produce long cylindrical gourds with smooth green skin and yellow flowers typical of cucurbit vines. When harvested young, the fruits resemble zucchini, but when left to fully mature and dry, the internal fibers form the familiar natural loofah sponge used for bathing and household use.

In garden settings, loofah gourds grow as fast-climbing vines that require strong trellising or vertical support. The vines produce large leaves and numerous gourds throughout the growing season in warm climates. Mature dried gourds can be peeled and cleaned to reveal the fibrous sponge interior commonly used as natural exfoliating bath sponges or eco-friendly cleaning tools.

Bath Loofah Gourds are also known as sponge gourds or luffa gourds and are valued for their practical use as a renewable natural product. Seeds from this listing are supplied by Renee’s Garden. This listing is for seed packets only and does not include live plants.

Sun Requirements ▾

Full sun is essential for healthy vine growth and gourd production. Provide at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Insufficient light may reduce flowering and fruit development.

Watering Instructions ▾

Maintain evenly moist soil during germination and early growth. As plants mature and produce gourds, consistent watering is important to support vigorous vine growth and fruit development. Avoid allowing soil to dry out completely, and avoid waterlogged conditions that may cause root rot.

Care Tips ▾

Bath Loofah Gourds grow best in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with organic matter. As a warm-season vine, they require consistently warm temperatures and average outdoor humidity. Strong trellising or vertical support is essential to support the long vines and developing gourds. Good airflow helps maintain healthy foliage. Start Bath Loofah Gourd seeds indoors 4–6 weeks before the final frost to provide a longer growing season, or direct sow outdoors once soil temperatures reach at least 21°C and frost risk has passed. Seeds germinate best in warm soil. Gourds typically mature in approximately 100–120 days. Allow fruits to fully mature and dry on the vine before harvesting if producing natural loofah sponges.
