Blue Spruce Stonecrop (Sedum rupestre ‘Blue Spruce’)

Blue Spruce Stonecrop (Sedum rupestre ‘Blue Spruce’)

Blue Spruce Stonecrop is a low-growing, succulent perennial valued for its unique blue-green foliage and spreading habit. This cultivar of Sedum rupestre is known for its resemblance to the needles of a blue spruce tree, adding cool-toned texture to the landscape.

This evergreen succulent forms a dense mat of needle-like, silvery blue foliage that maintains its colour throughout the growing season. In early to mid-summer, it produces clusters of small, star-shaped yellow flowers that rise just above the foliage, attracting pollinators such as bees.

Blue Spruce Sedum is well-suited for groundcover, rock gardens, containers, and edging. Its trailing and spreading habit makes it ideal for cascading over walls and filling in dry, sunny areas.

Sun Requirements ▾

Full sun. Provide at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day for dense growth, strong blue-green foliage colour, and abundant flowering. Light partial shade can be tolerated, but plants grown with insufficient sunlight may become less compact and lose some of their distinctive blue colouring.

Watering Instructions ▾

Low. Water periodically during the first growing season while the root system becomes established, allowing the soil to dry between waterings. Once established, Blue Spruce Stonecrop is highly drought tolerant and generally requires supplemental water only during extended periods of hot, dry weather. Avoid overwatering and persistently wet soil.

Care Tips ▾

Plant in exceptionally well-draining soil and avoid locations where water collects around the roots or crown. Blue Spruce Stonecrop requires little fertilizer and generally performs best in lean or rocky soil. Trim spreading stems whenever necessary to maintain the desired shape or prevent plants from extending beyond their intended area. Excellent drainage during winter and spring snowmelt is particularly important. A moisture meter is a great way to gauge your plant's moisture levels.
