Bolivian Turtle Vine (Callisia repens)

Bolivian Turtle Vine (Callisia repens)

Bolivian Turtle Vine, botanically known as Callisia repens, is a compact trailing houseplant prized for its masses of small leaves and cascading growth habit. The foliage grows closely along slender stems, creating a dense, textured appearance that becomes especially attractive as the stems begin to spill over the sides of the container.

Callisia repens is native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas and belongs to the Commelinaceae family. Its creeping growth habit makes it particularly well suited to hanging baskets, shelves, elevated planters, and mixed indoor displays. Regular trimming can encourage branching and help maintain a fuller, more compact appearance.

Sun Requirements ▾

Bright, indirect light is ideal for Bolivian Turtle Vine and helps encourage dense, compact growth. It can tolerate some gentle direct morning or late-day sunlight, but prolonged intense sun may damage the foliage. Insufficient light can cause elongated stems, wider spacing between leaves, and less compact growth.

Watering Instructions ▾

Water when the upper portion of the soil begins to dry. Callisia repens prefers moderate, consistent moisture but should not remain in waterlogged soil. Because of its relatively small root system, it can dry more quickly than some larger houseplants, particularly when grown in small pots or warm, bright locations.

Care Tips ▾

Bolivian Turtle Vine prefers warm temperatures and a well-draining potting mix that retains some moisture without staying saturated. Pinching or pruning longer stems encourages branching and helps prevent the plant from becoming sparse or leggy. Protect it from cold drafts and significant temperature fluctuations.
