Boreal Blizzard Honeyberry (Lonicera caerulea ‘Boreal Blizzard’)

Boreal Blizzard Honeyberry (Lonicera caerulea ‘Boreal Blizzard’) is an exceptionally hardy edible fruit shrub prized for its very large sweet blue berries, outstanding cold tolerance, and reliable Prairie performance. Developed specifically for northern climates, this haskap variety produces some of the largest berries available, with rich flavour ideal for fresh eating, baking, preserves, smoothies, and freezing.

In spring, pale yellow flowers appear early and tolerate freezing temperatures extremely well, allowing dependable fruit production even in colder Canadian climates. The elongated blue berries ripen in early summer and are packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and flavour. Its upright bushy growth habit and lush green foliage also provide ornamental value in edible landscapes and backyard fruit gardens.

Boreal Blizzard is especially valued for its improved berry size, sweeter flavour, and heavy productivity. For best fruit production and pollination, plant alongside another compatible honeyberry variety such as Boreal Beauty, Boreal Beast, or Aurora.

In Alberta, Boreal Blizzard Honeyberry performs best in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil and moderate moisture. It thrives during Prairie winters and remains highly dependable and low maintenance once established.

Sun Requirements ▾

Full sun is ideal for maximum flowering, fruit production, and berry sweetness. Plant in a location that receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. While honeyberries can tolerate partial shade, full sun encourages larger harvests, better fruit quality, and stronger plant growth.

Watering Instructions ▾

Moderate. Keep soil consistently moist during establishment and fruit development. Mature plants are relatively drought tolerant but produce the best harvests with regular watering.

Care Tips ▾

Plant near a compatible honeyberry variety for cross-pollination and maximum fruit production. Mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
