Sun Requirements ▾

Most bromeliads thrive in bright, indirect light. Guzmania and Vriesea prefer softer, filtered light, while Neoregelia and Aechmea can handle a bit more brightness. Avoid harsh direct sun, which can scorch the leaves—especially for thinner-leaved varieties. Low light may reduce color vibrancy and flowering potential.

Watering Instructions ▾

Water the central cup (or “tank”) of the plant, not just the soil. Keep the cup about ¼ full and flush it every 1–2 weeks to prevent buildup of bacteria or debris. Water the soil lightly—bromeliads don’t like soggy roots. Let the top inch of soil dry out before watering again. In drier environments, lightly mist around the plant to boost ambient humidity. Note: For tankless bromeliads like Dyckia or air plants (Tillandsia), follow their specific care needs—this guide is for standard potted types.

Care Tips ▾

Use a well-draining potting mix, such as orchid bark or cactus soil mixed with peat or coco coir. Never use heavy soil. Prefers warm temperatures between 18–29°C (65–85°F). Loves moderate to high humidity, but adapts well to household levels. Most bromeliads only bloom once, and then produce pups (baby plants) before the parent dies back. Pups can be separated and repotted once they’re about 1/3 the size of the mother.
