Buddha’s Temple, botanically known as Crassula ‘Buddha’s Temple’, is a distinctive collector succulent prized for its incredibly symmetrical, architectural growth. Its thick grey-green leaves grow in tightly stacked pairs, forming square columns that resemble the tiered structure of a temple — the feature that inspired its memorable name.
This unusual Crassula is a cultivated hybrid associated with Crassula pyramidalis and Crassula perfoliata var. falcata. Its compact, geometric form makes it especially appealing to succulent collectors and anyone looking for something a little different from a typical houseplant. Mature plants may also produce clusters of small flowers under favourable growing conditions.

Sun Requirements ▾
Provide very bright light with some direct sunlight to maintain dense, compact growth. A bright south- or west-facing window can work well indoors, although plants should be gradually acclimated to intense direct sunlight to prevent scorching. Insufficient light can cause stretched growth that disrupts the cultivar’s characteristic compact geometry. An LED grow light can help maintain healthy growth in spaces with limited natural light, particularly during Alberta’s shorter winter days.
Watering Instructions ▾
Water thoroughly and then allow the growing medium to dry substantially before watering again. Its succulent leaves store moisture, and consistently wet soil can quickly lead to root or stem problems. Reduce watering considerably when growth slows during winter. A moisture meter can help determine whether moisture remains deeper in the pot before watering, but it should be used alongside physically checking the growing medium.
Care Tips ▾
Plant Buddha’s Temple in a coarse, highly aerated and fast-draining cactus or succulent growing medium. Good airflow and drainage are particularly important around its densely stacked growth. Average to low household humidity is suitable, and prolonged damp conditions should be avoided. Handle the plant gently, as its tightly arranged leaves and distinctive growth can be damaged by rough handling.
