Bunchberry (Cornus canadensis) (NN)

Bunchberry (Cornus canadensis) (NN) is a charming native woodland perennial prized for its whorled green foliage, delicate white blooms, and bright red berries. This low-growing native groundcover spreads slowly through underground rhizomes, forming a lush carpet in shaded woodland gardens, naturalized landscapes, and moisture-rich planting areas.

In late spring to early summer, small clusters of true flowers are surrounded by showy white bracts that resemble miniature dogwood blooms. By late summer, the flowers give way to vivid red berries that provide ornamental interest and food for wildlife. The foliage may also develop attractive reddish-purple tones in autumn, extending seasonal interest in the landscape.

As a native North American woodland species, Bunchberry thrives in cool shaded environments and pairs beautifully with ferns, hostas, trilliums, and other native shade-loving plants. Its natural spreading habit makes it especially useful for woodland restoration projects, native gardens, and shaded erosion-control plantings.

In Alberta, Bunchberry performs best in partial shade to full shade with cool, moist, acidic soil rich in organic matter. Consistent moisture is important during hot Prairie summers, especially in more exposed garden settings.

Sun Requirements ▾

Partial shade to full shade. Bunchberry thrives in woodland conditions with filtered sunlight, dappled shade, or bright indirect light. It performs best beneath deciduous trees or along shaded garden edges where it is protected from intense afternoon sun. Excessive direct sunlight can scorch foliage and reduce plant vigour, particularly in warmer climates.

Watering Instructions ▾

Moderate to high. Prefers consistently moist soil and benefits from regular watering during dry periods. Do not allow the soil to dry out completely.

Care Tips ▾

Provide a layer of organic mulch such as leaf litter or bark mulch to help maintain cool, moist soil conditions. Avoid disturbing established colonies, as plants spread naturally over time.
