Cherry Bomb® Japanese Barberry (Berberis thunbergii ‘Cherry Bomb®’)

Cherry Bomb® Japanese Barberry (Berberis thunbergii ‘Cherry Bomb®’)

Cherry Bomb® Japanese Barberry (Berberis thunbergii ‘Cherry Bomb®’) is a bold compact shrub prized for its intensely vibrant cherry-red foliage and tidy rounded growth habit. This colourful deciduous shrub delivers season-long landscape interest and strong contrast in foundation plantings, borders, rock gardens, and mixed shrub beds.

The brilliant red foliage emerges vivid crimson in spring and maintains its rich colour throughout the growing season, especially when planted in full sun. Its dense branching habit creates a naturally compact rounded form that requires very little pruning to maintain shape. Small yellow spring flowers may appear along the stems, followed by ornamental red berries in fall that provide additional seasonal interest.

In Alberta, Cherry Bomb® Japanese Barberry performs best in full sun with well-drained soil and moderate watering during establishment. Once established, it develops excellent drought tolerance and adapts well to Prairie landscapes, urban gardens, and low-maintenance plantings. The bright foliage colour intensifies in sunny conditions and provides exceptional contrast against green shrubs and flowering perennials.

Sun Requirements ▾

Full sun is ideal for the richest red foliage colour and most compact growth habit. Plant in a location that receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Bright sunlight enhances the vibrant cherry-red colouring and encourages dense branching. While light partial shade is tolerated, foliage colour may become less intense and growth may become more open.

Watering Instructions ▾

Moderate. Water regularly during establishment. Once established, plants are drought tolerant and require supplemental watering only during extended dry periods.

Care Tips ▾

Wear gloves when pruning, as stems are thorny. Minimal pruning is required beyond occasional shaping or removal of damaged branches.
