Chocolate Mint (Mentha × piperita ‘Chocolate’)

Chocolate Mint (Mentha × piperita ‘Chocolate’)

Chocolate Mint (Mentha × piperita f. citrata 'Chocolate') is a delightful aromatic herb prized for its refreshing peppermint flavour with subtle hints of chocolate. Its deep green leaves, often accented with dark burgundy stems, release a rich, sweet fragrance when touched, making it a favourite for culinary gardens, tea enthusiasts, and fragrant patio containers. While it doesn't taste like chocolate candy, its unique aroma combines cool mint with warm cocoa-like undertones that make it stand out from other mint varieties.

This vigorous perennial spreads quickly to form lush clumps of fragrant foliage and produces attractive spikes of soft lavender flowers in summer that are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators. Chocolate Mint is widely used for fresh and dried teas, desserts, hot chocolate, cocktails, fruit salads, syrups, baking, garnishes, and homemade herbal products. Its aromatic foliage also makes an excellent addition to potpourri and scented bouquets.

Chocolate Mint performs beautifully in herb gardens, raised beds, patio containers, window boxes, and kitchen gardens. Because of its spreading nature, many gardeners prefer growing it in containers to keep it contained. It pairs beautifully with rosemary, thyme, oregano, sage, basil, and lavender, creating attractive and productive herb displays.

Sun Requirements ▾

Full sun to partial shade. An LED grow light can help maintain healthy growth in spaces with limited natural light. In Alberta, morning sun with light afternoon shade helps maintain lush foliage during the hottest part of summer, while full sun encourages the strongest flavour and most vigorous growth.

Watering Instructions ▾

Moderate. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top few centimetres of soil begin to dry, especially during hot summer weather or when growing in containers.

Care Tips ▾

Grow Chocolate Mint in containers or use root barriers in garden beds to help control its vigorous spreading habit. Harvest stems regularly throughout the growing season to encourage fresh, bushy growth and the best flavour. Remove flower spikes if growing primarily for culinary use, as this helps direct energy into foliage production. A moisture meter is a great way to gauge your plant's moisture levels.
