Coleus FlameThrower® Chili Pepper (Coleus scutellarioides ‘FlameThrower® Chili Pepper’)

Coleus FlameThrower® Chili Pepper (Coleus scutellarioides ‘FlameThrower® Chili Pepper’)

Coleus FlameThrower® Chili Pepper (Coleus scutellarioides ‘FlameThrower® Chili Pepper’) is a dramatic foliage plant prized for its intensely coloured leaves and compact, well-branched growth habit. Part of the popular FlameThrower® series, this variety delivers bold shades of fiery red, orange, burgundy, and deep purple that provide continuous colour from spring until frost without relying on flowers.

The narrow, finely textured leaves create a unique appearance compared to traditional coleus varieties. Vibrant red-orange centres blend into deep burgundy and purple margins, giving the plant the look of glowing embers or fiery chili peppers. This rich colour combination adds striking contrast to containers, landscape beds, mixed planters, and tropical-style garden displays.

FlameThrower® Chili Pepper develops a naturally compact, mounded habit that requires little maintenance while providing season-long impact. Its colourful foliage pairs beautifully with chartreuse plants, silver foliage, ornamental grasses, and flowering annuals. Whether used as a focal point or as part of a mixed planting, it adds texture, colour, and visual excitement to any garden setting.

In Alberta, FlameThrower® Chili Pepper performs exceptionally well as a summer annual, bringing vibrant foliage colour to patios, containers, and landscape plantings throughout the growing season.

Sun Requirements ▾

Part sun to full shade. FlameThrower® Chili Pepper develops its richest foliage colours in bright filtered light, morning sun, or locations receiving several hours of gentle direct sunlight daily. In Alberta, it can tolerate more sun when soil moisture is maintained, but protection from intense afternoon sun helps preserve the most vibrant foliage colour and prevents leaf scorch.

Watering Instructions ▾

Moderate. Keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top portion of the soil begins to dry. Container-grown plants may require more frequent watering during hot weather.

Care Tips ▾

Pinch growing tips occasionally to encourage an even fuller appearance. Remove flower spikes if they develop to keep the plant focused on foliage production. A moisture meter is a great way to gauge your plant's moisture levels.
