Coleus Ignite® Ruby Slipper (Coleus scutellarioides ‘Ignite® Ruby Slipper’)

Coleus Ignite® Ruby Slipper (Coleus scutellarioides ‘Ignite® Ruby Slipper’) is a bold foliage plant prized for its intense ruby-red leaves, vigorous growth habit, and outstanding garden performance. This eye-catching variety delivers season-long colour without relying on flowers, making it an excellent choice for containers, landscape beds, mixed planters, and shaded garden spaces.

The large leaves display rich shades of ruby red, burgundy, and deep crimson that remain vibrant throughout the growing season. Its dramatic foliage creates instant impact in the garden and pairs beautifully with flowering annuals, tropical plants, ornamental grasses, and contrasting foliage selections. The bold colour holds exceptionally well through summer, providing continuous visual interest from spring until frost.

Ignite® Ruby Slipper develops a full, well-branched habit that quickly fills containers and garden spaces. Its vigorous growth makes it ideal as a focal point in mixed planters or massed in landscape beds for dramatic colour displays. Unlike many coleus varieties, the Ignite® series is known for its strong performance, excellent branching, and impressive landscape presence.

In Alberta, Ignite® Ruby Slipper performs exceptionally well as a summer annual, bringing rich foliage colour and texture to gardens, patios, and outdoor living spaces.

Sun Requirements ▾

Part sun to full shade. Ignite® Ruby Slipper develops its richest foliage colour in bright filtered light, morning sun, or locations with several hours of gentle sunlight. In Alberta, it can tolerate more sun than many traditional coleus varieties if adequate moisture is maintained. Protection from intense afternoon sun helps preserve vibrant foliage colour and prevents leaf scorch.

Watering Instructions ▾

Moderate. Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Container-grown plants may require more frequent watering during hot weather. Avoid allowing the soil to dry out completely.

Care Tips ▾

Pinch growing tips occasionally to encourage an even fuller, bushier plant. Remove flower spikes if they appear to direct more energy into foliage production. A moisture meter is a great way to gauge your plant's moisture levels.
