Dolce Fresca Basil (Ocimum basilicum ‘Dolce Fresca’)

Dolce Fresca Basil (Ocimum basilicum ‘Dolce Fresca’)

Dolce Fresca Basil (Ocimum basilicum ‘Dolce Fresca’) is a compact, award-winning sweet basil variety prized for its large aromatic leaves, dense growth habit, and exceptional culinary flavour. This versatile herb produces abundant glossy green foliage packed with the classic sweet basil aroma and taste that makes it a favourite for fresh cooking, container gardens, and herb planters.

Unlike traditional basil varieties that can become tall and sprawling, Dolce Fresca develops a naturally compact, rounded habit that stays neat and attractive throughout the growing season. The large leaves are perfect for harvesting fresh for pesto, salads, sandwiches, pasta dishes, sauces, and garnishes. Its attractive appearance also makes it an excellent addition to ornamental containers and edible landscapes.

Dolce Fresca Basil thrives in warm weather and produces continuous harvests throughout the growing season. Regular picking encourages even fuller growth and increased leaf production. The fragrant foliage also helps attract pollinators when allowed to flower later in the season.

In Alberta, Dolce Fresca Basil performs exceptionally well in containers, raised beds, and herb gardens, providing fresh harvests from late spring until frost.

Sun Requirements ▾

Full sun is ideal for the best growth and flavour development. Plant in a location that receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Bright sunlight encourages dense growth, large leaves, and strong aromatic oils. An LED grow light can help maintain healthy growth in spaces with limited natural light.

Watering Instructions ▾

Moderate. Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water when the top portion of the soil begins to dry. Avoid allowing plants to wilt repeatedly, as this can reduce leaf quality and growth.

Care Tips ▾

Harvest leaves regularly to encourage dense growth and prevent premature flowering. Pinch off flower buds when they appear to keep the plant producing tender, flavourful foliage. A moisture meter is a great way to gauge your plant's moisture levels.
